چکیده

This study measures the uplift rates of a flight of marine terraces along the Glenafric coastal region of the South Island of New Zealand, which will provide a context for how local fold growth in the North Canterbury fold and thrust belt (NCFTB) contributes to local uplift rates. Several methods were used to measure uplift rate of the marine terraces: 1) collecting shell samples for AAR dating in order to refine terrace ages; 2) use of DGPS surveys to collect the elevations of marine terrace inner edges and possible marine terrace erosional surfaces; 3) creating several cross-sections based on the DGPS surveys to refine terrace boundaries; and 4) calculating the uplift rate of all marine terraces along the North Canterbury fold and thrust belt to determine possible structural influence on local uplift. Amino acid rasterization (AAR) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating techniques were used to date the youngest terrace, Qt3, at ~100 ka, placing Qt3 at marine isotope stage (MIS) 5c. Correlations to sea level highstands from inner edge elevation projections from the cross-sections were used to date Qt2 at ~120 ka and Qt1 at ~210 ka. Correlations of inner edge elevations to the Cass and Montserrat anticlines show that inner edges closest to the anticlinal axis were generally higher in elevation than points farther from the anticlinal axis. However, this was not the case for all GPS survey points as GPS surveys in the southern region of the field exhibit low elevations and are in close proximity to the anticlinal crest. Therefore another mechanism must contribute to marine terrace uplift as well.

Morphometric Analysis to Assess Sea Level History and Uplift Rate in the Pleistocene Marine Terraces of Chabahar

Abstract Marine terraces have long been used as baseline geodetic markers of relative past sea levels, reflecting the interaction between vertical crustal movements and sea level oscillations. The terraces age and elevation of shoreline angles can be used to determine uplift rate. Disparate uplift rates in pervious investigation in the study area are related to manual measurements based on ...

High-level surfaces, plateau uplift, and foreland development, Bolivian central Andes

Newly dated Tertiary strata in the Bolivian central Andean plateau and synthesis of the Tertiary record in the adjacent Subandean fold-thrust belt constrain the age of deformation in both regions. Age of deformation within the plateau is determined by dated crosscutting relations associated with a regionally extensive high-level surface known as the San Juan del Oro surface. New Ar-Ar dates on ...

Monitoring Marin Terraces Elevation Movement Rate in The Makran Coasts of Iran (Konarak to Kalat)

Introduction The Coastal terrace is a unique tectonic complication in Iran and covers more than half of the Oman Sea coast from Jask to Quatre. These beaches are constantly rising and this has greatly influenced the morphology of the formation and deformation of Makran coasts marine terrace, which can be seen in the formation of coastal cliffs in these areas. But one of the important quest...

Active folding of fluvial terraces across the Siwaliks Hills, Himalayas of central Nepal

We analyze geomorphic evidence of recent crustal deformation in the subHimalaya of central Nepal, south of the Kathmandu Basin. The Main Frontal Thrust fault (MFT), which marks the southern edge of the sub-Himalayan fold belt, is the only active structure in that area. Active fault bend folding at the MFT is quantified from structural geology and fluvial terraces along the Bagmati and Bakeya Ri...

Kinematics of the Dena Fault and Its Relation to Deep-Seated Transverse Faults in Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt, Iran

The NNW-trending Dena Fault, with 140 km length, cuts the major structures of Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt in Borujen region. The fault has divided the region in two zones, in which different structural, andmorphological features as well assedimentation and seismtectonic characteristics have developed. This study presents a new interpretation for the kinematics of Dena Fault based on field evidence....
